Epo and also its later derivatives like Darbopoietin. 

In fact, the entire company got off the ground by buying up IP on EPO that was initially generated through publicly funded research.

Because the Tour of California was on Eurosport after the Giro coverage last week (otherwise I would not care enough to follow it), and I still find it funny that the main producer of EPO and derivatives sponsors a pro cycling race.
