Looks like it's just been announced:

With several excellent entries on the shortlist this year it must have been a tough decision. It was rooting for Gordon Stainforth's "Fiva" although "Into the Silence" is also an excellent title.

In reply to Only a hill: well deserved for some great writing, tough competition though

It is shame that he feels he can no longer make a living from writing!

Indeed, I was saddened to read his recent blog post. I think he's an inspiration to more people than he realises. On the other hand, if it's no longer practical...

Wait - what? He's stopped writing? I missed that. Really disappointing news as I enjoyed Cold Wars and Psychovertical enormously.

He certainly won't be writing as much!

Why, thank you.

Thanks for that. Such a shame - but a harsh reality of creative endeavour, that so many people don't seem to realise.
 Tall Clare 16 Nov 2012
In reply to The New NickB:

Hopefully he'll find a way to make it all work.

You're welcome

I heard Andy K on Radio 5 speaking about Karen. He spoke just as her partner and I felt quite upset that his own accomplishments weren't mentioned. I imagine Prince Philip feels just the same

Anyway, I really hope he finds whatever mojo he needs to find.
Very well deserved! Bo)

Thought Cold Wars was a good book but that Fiva was great and lasted much longer in the memory for me. A real shame for Gordon.

Indeed, and it's a shame that so few of us are able to make a living from our creative endeavour of choice. Sometimes I think that's part of the beauty of it though ... striving for something you can in all probability never achieve.

No wonder so many climbers are also writers, musicians or painters!

Good to hear Cold Wars got the award, its on my xmas wishlist having read and loved Psychovertical. Sad to hear he won't be writing any more such books.

Having read the blog article it makes sense why it seems like authors have a new book every few months. Shame quality isn't as rewarding as quantity!
