P.E.I. police force threatens to play Nickelback to drunk drivers

KENSINGTON, P.E.I. — A police department in western Prince Edward Island is threatening to impose the Nickelback treatment on anyone who drinks and drives.

The Kensington Police Service shared a social media post over the weekend promising drunk drivers will be listening to one of the Canadian band’s tunes while riding in the back seat of a cruiser if they’re arrested.

Const. Robb Hartlen says on Facebook that if you’re foolish enough to get behind the wheel after drinking then a tune performed by lead singer Chad Kroeger and the band “is the perfect gift for you.”

He says if the department doesn’t have to arrest anyone for impaired driving, it will avoid him having to “ruin a perfectly good unopened copy of Nickelback.”

The band has been a huge commercial success, with multiple Juno wins, but is also gleefully maligned by some detractors.

It has been the subject of spiteful petitions, protests and a Chicago mayor was once pressured into clarifying he wasn’t a fan.

Kroeger told The Canadian Press in a 2014 interview that the critics have actually done the band a favour by heightening the public discussion about the group.

Not sure I understand the hate for Nickleback either. They've done a couple of decent car karaoke songs and there are lots of worse bands out there.

There's not much logic to bands becoming uncool; it happened to Dire Straits (temporarily perhaps) and U2. Abba, on the other hand, have pulled off the much more difficult reverse trick.

They've actually done some okay (ish...kinda...if you're drunk) tracks but they are the ultimate when it comes to selling out with cheesy hits aimed at the lowest common denominator crowd to make money, while trying to pretend they're a 'real' rock/metal band. This is looked down on in metal particularly as it's a genre where integrity is considered highly important.
They were also HUGELY overplayed (the worst of their tracks) which made many of us feel we were being tortured.

Part of it is also that they do appear to be able to laugh at themselves and somewhat feed the meme creation themselves which is actually pretty cool.

Oh also Chad and Avril Lavigne. She is utterly mental. And is a destroyer of bands. Look what she did to Deryck Whibley - (can't seem to get urls to convert and they're all massive...can't be arsed faffing anymore, go look up "deryck Whibley" then "derych whibley fat" and you'll see.
oh and Drivelback changed noticably more towards the poppy and shite immediately as she got involved.
THE DEVIL SHE IS!
(most conversations in this vain tend to end with "....you would though.")
