The actual CREDITS are nothing to write home about!

I assumed the OP was about credits graphics sequences, perhaps inspired by yesterday's Google doodle marking the 93rd anniversary of Saul Bass' birth.

Obviously lots of Saul Bass qualifies

Fair play...I was taking 'credits' to mean 'opening sequence'.

Ok then, how's about "The Thing".

There are no credits over that! That's an opening scene, not a credit sequence.

I think A N is rather unusual in having no title or opening credits at all.

Unusual but by no means unique (nor pioneering, I'd hazard).
They used to hand out lobby cards with it.

Coincidentally last night I watched Friedkin's "Sorcerer" (another nightmarish jungle shoot though not quite on the same scale) which was released in 1977, and it has just the studio names and the film title over the beginning. Great film, by the way - I think you'd enjoy it.

I have been a bit pedantic I suppose and something like Lord of War shows that there is a middle ground between "opening scene" and "credits sequence"

'North by Northwest': wonderful stage-setting opening by Saul Bass. Great music by Bernard Herrmann, and ends with the proverbial cameo by Hitchcock comically missing his bus.

'A Shot in the Dark': wonderful animated opening credits with input from the great Fritz Freleng. Henry Mancini's peerless music too.

'The Shining': Totally draws you in from the start. Cold, long, ominous panning shots of that road up to the Overlook Hotel, while Wendy Carlos's incredible electronic soundtrack cranks up the the atmosphere.

That's nice to hear, Paul, as I actually cut the opening title sequence of The Shining, i.e. selected the aerial shots from about an hour of footage, and did the first rough cut (as a piece of editing it was actually rather easy). It got tweaked a bit later by Ray Lovejoy and Stanley Kubrick as the title and credits were dropped in. I also laid the music - mind you, that required no skill at all as it was the only piece of complete readymade, uncut music used in the film (and the only piece by Wendy Carlos, apart from a few sound effects added later in the score). I must emphasise the obvious, of course: that the whole concept of the opening title sequence was entirely Stanley Kubrick's.

Interestingly, Saul Bass designed The Shining poster (but I think very much to a preconceived idea by Stanley), but he was not involved in the title sequence at all. I was fortunate to meet him when he visited Stanley at his home in Hertfordshire. A very nice guy.

That's what it was called - I saw that in the early 90s but couldn't remember it's name. Excellent stuff
