It was quite interesting. At least the makers managed to stay with one subject most of the time. I was a bit baffled by the ski tourer and his dog who seemed to have got benighted on the wrong side of the mountain - how did he manage that?  He looked well equipped and experienced.

You never know how people are going to react in a stressful situation. Do you attempt self-rescue in that situation, and potentially make things worse by getting more lost or wandering onto a dangerous avalanche-risk slope? Do you follow the advice, call for help and then stay put til help arrives? Do you struggle to make a rational decision? Stress, fear and panic can do weird things to people's minds and reasoning processes.

We located one lost party in the Brecon Beacons and one of the group burst into tears with relief, having been absolutely convinced they were going to die on the hill that night. They weren't, but it was dark and clearly a scary environment and situation for them and they weren't making rational decisions. The ski tourer genuinely could have died in those conditions.

Heroes.

I know all about avoiding panic having got lost in a cave in Derbyshire once. The black dog of fear raises its head and you have to hold it down and continue to think rationally, which is how we eventually found our way out.
