The Macbeth of music, these days?...
Regardless, for me, I've always had a particular soft spot for Well I Wonder from the sublime Meat is Murder album...
Having said that, The Queen is Dead album is probably their pinnacle:
So many.
Just now, Sweet and Tender Hooligan - "poor old man, he had accident with a 3 bar fire but that's OK - he was old and he would have died anyway". Lovely stuff.
Yeah, so many.
I particularly remember Well I Wonder, because it was one of the first songs that I ever heard on a Sony CD Walkman, shortly after I'd left Manchester to start university in London.
I remember being amazed at the clarity of the sound, as compared to my old cassette Walkman. And, of course, the sound of rain, on the intro and outro of the track, reminded me of home.
If you mean Morrissey rather than the Smiths, it would be Suedehead, Every Day is Like Sunday and First of the Gang to Die.
I'd give an honourable mention to National Front Disco, Piccadilly Palare and Last of the Famous International Playboys.
Both... Tracks wot are Morrissey'ed.
Fangs for prompting the clarification.
P. S. Any truth in the rumour that you advocated renaming Hobson Moor to You Are the Quarry for inclusion in Over the Moors?
I really liked the cover of obscure 1960s ballad "Interlude" that he did as a duet with Siouxsie Sioux.
Girlfriend In A Coma
Paint a Vulgar Picture
Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want
Impossible to narrow it down to one!
As a teen listener stuck in a small rural town, it was 'There is a light'
'Take me out tonight
Where there's music and there's people
And they're young and alive'
Preferably not the disco at The Rugby Club!
Perhaps Rubber Ring?
But this is like picking my favourite tree. Impossible
>Girlfriend In A Coma
That came out on the day my gf went to hospital, in an ambulance, with suspected meningitis.
There is a light, Panic, Frankly Mr Shankly, Heaven knows I'm miserable now, Reel around the fountain, How Soon is Now.
Everyday is like Sunday, You're the one for me, fatty, First of the gang, Lazy sunbathers, Last night on maudlin street.
I've a feeling a Smiths retrospective is in order on my spofify today.
I'm going to pick one of the cheery ones. I'll get back to you...
> There is a light, Panic, Frankly Mr Shankly, Heaven knows I'm miserable now, Reel around the fountain, How Soon is Now.
How Soon is Now is head and shoulders above anything else the Smiths did in my book. Sounds like nothing else, almost has a melody and manages to rhyme heir and particular.
And 'shyness that is criminally vulgar' is almost poetry.
He said Morrissey, not the Levellers!
Cemetery gates because it is so jolly.
Still ill because that verse riff and the lyrics are top drawer.
I decree today that life is simply taking and not giving. England is mine, it owes me a living.
All the old stuff was amazing.
Newer stuff was a bit patchy but this one passed muster....

Ask gets my vote. Poignant and funny lyrics, upbeat and hummable tune
Cant believe nobody has mentioned Reel Around The Fountain. Other faves are Ask, What Difference Dies it Make, How Soon is Now and Sheila Take a Bow
I’ve never Morrisied, I think I’m just in the wrong generation who see him as a bit of a knob.
However that lyric is genius, I might go and investigate and ignore his other failings
> I’ve never Morrisied, I think I’m just in the wrong generation who see him as a bit of a knob.
He's been a total nob for well over a decade now...
The guitarist of the smiths was Johnny Mar I think so I would give Morris or whatever his name is 1/4 of point for this. And only because this Marr person cited an actual musical genius as an influence on him, which is Bert Jansch.
Morrisons or whatever the guy in questions name is was to me and my generation a flower swinging tw*t ripe for exploitation by the Thatcherite ruling class or more accurately fitting right into their yuppy world like some pathetic pet shop boy.
Man we hated that shit which was during the miners strike.George Michael knew the score as a paid up member of the YCL. What was morrison just another money grabber like a Bowie(minus talent) . I won't apologise, I like my artist geniuses to be politically on the right side and not a political shape shifter depending on the political mood of the day.
For me it's Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me. The first minute and half are agonizing: a Dante-esqe wailing which I thought on first hearing was the sound of animal distress. Apparently, it's from the Miners' Strike.
ISTR that it's both M&M's favourite Smiths' song (but I might be imagining this: it would seem a little incredible that they could have agreed on anything at that late stage.)
Second place goes to RAtF (Hatful of Hollow version). Though "two lumps please, you're the bee's knees" is borrowed, the quintessential Morrissey come back "..but so am I" grants forgiveness.

That said, so what's your favourite Morrissey song?
Or your favourite Bert Jansch song.
> That said, so what's your favourite Morrissey song?
Oh there's too many to say 🙂
Favourite owl, too; for the win.
What she said :
"How come someone hasn't noticed
That I'm dead
And decided to bury me?
God knows, I'm ready!"
La-la-la...
What she said was sad
But then, all the rejection she's had
To pretend to be happy
Could only be idiocy
La-la-la...
What she said was not for the job or
Lover that she never had
Oh...
No no no...
What she read
All heady books
She'd sit and prophesise
(It took a tattooed boy from
Birkenhead
To really really open her eyes)
What she said :
"I smoke 'cause I'm hoping for an
Early death
And I need to cling to something!"
Why don’t you find out for yourself
purely from hearing so many times , it was the soundtrack to a very good VHS I used to watch 😎
Morrissey is/was many things but calling him a Tory is a bit off the mark...

Apologies to you Darren and everyone else on here for shit posting by trying to ruin your wee Morrisey party and change it to one I can relate to. I was in an alcohol induced revolutionary mood after some vino and looking for an outlet.I don't normally do shit posts but that was one alright. Morrisey must have talent if all you decent good guys like him he's just rubbed me up the wrong way from the start though I appreciate the word choice in his songs and calling an album "Meat is Murder" was an excellent statement to make back then . One of my oldest pals was a huge fan of his in the 80s (and he is a socialist) so ignore my "not socialist enough" half-cut post please. 😬
Edit: Also The Smiths were members of the Red Wedge front during the 80s with Billy Bragg, Weller, Madness, Tom Robinson etc etc trying to get folk to vote Labour and get the Tories out.
It's just some of us commies wanted more socialism, bloody typical.
No worries pal; your post didn't bother me in the slightest... And Mozza has certainly been accused of a lot worse than being "not socialist enough" recently, anyhow!
My favourite Morrisey song is probably Bob The Builder (Can We Fix It), but then I don't remember him doing any others
Suedehead. Or the boy with the thorn in his side if you include smiths.
My favourite Morrissey song is "The Queen is Dead"
No one ever cites that as their favourite Morrissey/Smiths track, so that makes me unique, as unique as the man himself.
