Regardless, for me, I've always had a particular soft spot for Well I Wonder from the sublime Meat is Murder album...
Having said that, The Queen is Dead album is probably their pinnacle:

I particularly remember Well I Wonder, because it was one of the first songs that I ever heard on a Sony CD Walkman, shortly after I'd left Manchester to start university in London.
I remember being amazed at the clarity of the sound, as compared to my old cassette Walkman. And, of course, the sound of rain, on the intro and outro of the track, reminded me of home.

I'd give an honourable mention to National Front Disco, Piccadilly Palare and Last of the Famous International Playboys.

How Soon is Now is head and shoulders above anything else the Smiths did in my book. Sounds like nothing else, almost has a melody and manages to rhyme heir and particular.
And 'shyness that is criminally vulgar' is almost poetry.

The guitarist of the smiths was Johnny Mar I think so I would give Morris or whatever his name is 1/4 of point for this. And only because this Marr person cited an actual musical genius as an influence on him, which is Bert Jansch.
Morrisons or whatever the guy in questions name is was to me and my generation a flower swinging tw*t ripe for exploitation by the Thatcherite ruling class or more accurately fitting right into their yuppy world like some pathetic pet shop boy.
Man we hated that shit which was during the miners strike.George Michael knew the score as a paid up member of the YCL. What was morrison just another money grabber like a Bowie(minus talent) . I won't apologise, I like my artist geniuses to be politically on the right side and not a political shape shifter depending on the political mood of the day.

For me it's Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me. The first minute and half are agonizing: a Dante-esqe wailing which I thought on first hearing was the sound of animal distress. Apparently, it's from the Miners' Strike.
ISTR that it's both M&M's favourite Smiths' song (but I might be imagining this: it would seem a little incredible that they could have agreed on anything at that late stage.)
Second place goes to RAtF (Hatful of Hollow version). Though "two lumps please, you're the bee's knees" is borrowed, the quintessential Morrissey come back "..but so am I" grants forgiveness.

Apologies to you Darren and everyone else on here for shit posting by trying to ruin your wee Morrisey party and change it to one I can relate to. I was in an alcohol induced revolutionary mood after some vino and looking for an outlet.I don't normally do shit posts but that was one alright. Morrisey must have talent if all you decent good guys like him he's just rubbed me up the wrong way from the start though I appreciate the word choice in his songs and calling an album "Meat is Murder" was an excellent statement to make back then . One of my oldest pals was a huge fan of his in the 80s (and he is a socialist) so ignore my "not socialist enough" half-cut post please. 😬
Edit: Also The Smiths were members of the Red Wedge front during the 80s with Billy Bragg, Weller, Madness, Tom Robinson etc etc trying to get folk to vote Labour and get the Tories out.
It's just some of us commies wanted more socialism, bloody typical.
