whats anyone watching this weekend, cinema or DVD?

I picked up the godFather trilogy on VHS for a Squid, so will watch that and see if it seems Better many years on.

And may root out a copy of this silent Hill as its getting some good nods on another thread.

I look forward to your opinion on the trilogy of Godfather films. I have never seen them all in a single weekend before.

I was the only one praising Silent Hill. I seem to be in a minority of one!

I will likely end up watching some nonsense like The Island (Ewan MacGregor, Sean Bean, Scar-Jo)

Oh no! Thats a Michael bay, Logans run rip off. Its all noise and Nonsense, sort of Like Resident evil, only worse, and it doesnt have Milla to make it bearable

I know, but....mmm....I dunno....silly running jumping shooting shiny hardware glossy crap does appeal sometimes! I did watch All About Eve this week so I have paid my "b&w classic with proper acting and dialogue and story" dues already !

But it has Scar-Jo! Isn't that better??

I'll help you out....i love Silent Hill, and i've never played the game. Very atmospheric.

For weekend fayre i'd recommend Inception or Iron Man 1 or 3

Frozen (2010) is on Film4 at 21:00. About some people stuck on a skilift overnight with a life-death decision to make. Sounds crap but nothing else to do...

I imagine there might be a few people really disappointed when they start to watch the film...and realises it isn't what they thought it was

It took me 3 attempts to complete Inception but by the end I was very impressed.
I am having the same problem with The Adjustment Bureau.
Graeme G 09 May 2014
In reply to broken spectre:

Hey ho...each to their own. On the other hand i thought it was an incredibly clever well structured blockbuster which made you think on some level. Unlike most big budget films eg Iron Man etc which do nothing more than tell a story with lots of explosions, and eye candy, along the way.

Ending not as good as it could have been but OMG Emily Blunt never looked better.

Watched silent Hill, and silent Hill Revelation last night.

Liked the style, and the general atmosphere of first one. There was a lot of what, but, eh, to the storytelling Though. Oddly, watching the Second film fills in the Blanks and makes Better sense of the first. revelation being the right word for it.

But second film was a bit pants and needlessly nasty in parts. Both are Pretty dark in their imagery. Child rape, woman raped by barbed wire then torn in Two, man cutting a Live persons chest off to cook, prisoners Hands being lopped off by Pyramid Head guy, woman getting skin ripped off by same. Burning Alive, etc. pretty grim stuff. And Those Blind stabby nurses... Shudder.

Overall, enjoyed them, story is good when you figure it out. Probably would have helped if i pre Knew the Game mythos, as that was probably target Audience. Writer and director should have told story Better, and was creepy enough without the Gore porn so blatant. Think Maybe they indulged themself their, and studio may have made them do revelation, as the first one was too confusing.

all in all i will give them 6.5/10... good watch, creepy, but needed Better storytelling and less over the top ick.

Ps also watched comic adaptation, R.I.P.D. boy what a stinker. 4/10... just because Jeff bridges was Funny, and Kevin Bacon good as usual.

one more gripe about silent Hill, and it seems to Apply to a lot of modern films...

whats with the Sound levels?

if you Turn the Sound up Loud enough to actually Hear the dialogue, everytime theirs an action Sequence it Suddenly Becomes over the top Loud.

do they not use Sound editors anymore? or do they balance the Sound for cinema viewing, and not bother Rebalancing it for home dvd viewing?

Short stories compilation films weekend for me this week.

Dead of night.
Creepshow.
Tales From the crypt.
Tales From the darkside.
 Blue Straggler 16 May 2014
In reply to Choss:

I don't know Tales from the Crypt, is there a feature film or are you watching episodes from the series? Tales from the Darkside the movie is great, especially the cat story and the linking scenes.

I've just realised I've never seen Creepshow. I must remedy this.

Which Dead of Night are you watching, the Michael Redgrave one?

Shame that Twilight Zone: The Movie is hard to get hold of (or am I wrong about that)?
OP Choss 16 May 2014
In reply to Blue Straggler:

The film, stories Linked by the cryptkeeper, with Joan Collins.

Tales from the Darkside the movie is great, especially the cat story and the linking scenes.

Oh yes.

> I've just realised I've never seen Creepshow. I must remedy this.

George Romero, with Dennis Nielsen.

> Which Dead of Night are you watching, the Michael Redgrave one?

Yes, Michael redgrave, 1945 i think.

Ps wrote Thoughts about silent Hill above. And could only manage Godfather Until don Vito gets shot, then lost Interest. Still too plodding and laborious for me.

Filling in one of my Coen brothers gaps this weekend with Miller's Crossing. I've been meaning to watch it for years.

Incidentally, is anyone watching the new Fargo series? I was all set up to hate it as it would clearly ruin the film (one of my all-time favourites), but it's actually really good! Very funny. Great Minnesota nice atmosphere in the face of bad deeds.

Now that WOULD be a horror show!

In reply to Choss:

Revelation was weak, saw it in the cinema because Adelaide Clemens was very much flavour-of-the-month at the time. The 3D was beautiful at times (snow and ash falling).

As mentioned, I didn't know the game stories and this maybe enhanced my enjoyment of the first one - the whole "not knowing what is going on at any point in the film" made it properly unsettling and unpredictable. I thought it was somewhat different to "gore porn" somehow. Seemed classier.
 Blue Straggler 16 May 2014
In reply to Choss:

I didn't notice that on Silent Hill but I've noticed it elsewhere (usually it's the useless projectionist at my local Odeon failing to flick all the right switches though)

I'm watching it and it's OK but have really got an aversion to films/ stories which claim to be true but ain't. It really spoiled Picnic at Hanging Rock for me (retrospectively)There ought to be a law.
