Typically, I’ve latched on to something decades after its conception. Apparently, this genre is psytrance…

Nice visual, but spoiled by the annoying background music.

I suspect you're not playing it loud enough? Put it through a decent speaker or some headphones!

In reply to Phantom Disliker:

But then it would just be loud and annoying....

Lots of variety in psytrance. It was originally called Goa trance but as the music diversified and became global it was changed to psychedelic trance. Can go from the most uplifting and complicated of tunes to really dark minimal stuff. Generally I tend toward the latter but a good tune is a good tune whatever the sub-genre.

There's also spinoff into slower music but using the same sounds, even some breakbeat and drum and bass stuff. Needless to say it sounds even better under the influence of psychedelics, but then that's true of almost all music.

Some old faves:

Conga Fury by Juno Reactor: youtube.com/watch?v=Crg_pMUBgIs&

The Egg by Orichalcum: youtube.com/watch?v=0hB7C0xixxs&

Deranger by Hallucinogen: youtube.com/watch?v=Dxx3NOS1gU8&

The Frog by X-Dream: youtube.com/watch?v=l3i6btf1zek& (the whole album Radio is really good)

My Dear Medical Assurance by Transwave: youtube.com/watch?v=G1xr29M3dew&

Hit and Run by Slinky Wizard: youtube.com/watch?v=CrfnPcdMCcs&

Ant Invasion by Planet B.E.N: youtube.com/watch?v=d4yj4Gl-cEU&

The best example of a "spinoff into slower music" is Hallucinogen in Dub - a brilliant amalgamation of psychedelic sounds without the stupid cheesy psytrance galloping kickdrum

Ta for all the suggestions!!

Simon Posford is your friend. Pretty much defined the whole genre with Twisted in 1995 as Hallucinogen. His wiki page will give you the story.

Brilliant album that sounds completely fresh today almost 25 years later. So ahead of his time
