Just finished series 1 of The Sinner and this is up with the best TV detective psychological thrillers I've ever seen. A seemingly open and shut case gradually unravels as the flawed lead detective (Bill Pullman in stellar form) feels something is wrong and decides to investigate despite orders to close the case. Beautifully acted, directed and plotted and nearly perfect from the opening credits to the last scene. Great reviews. Series 2 seems to get even higher critical acclaim and it started tonight on BBC4. Highly recommended.

If you like that check out Black Spot.

Thanks ... not heard of that before. Closest feel and quality to The Sinner I knew was maybe True Detective season one.

I can see the comparison with TD1 but I also liken the sinister tone to that of the Canadian cop show Cardinal which I think has also run a couple of series on BBC4. Best TV slot of the week for me, anyway.

I agree about Cardinal... another favorite of mine, albeit maybe a bit more conventional.
