Just seen that Wayne Shorter has died. I only saw him live once, I think in 2003 but have been listening to his records, CDs etc since the 1970s. I guess I first heard him as part of the Miles Davis 2nd quartet or possibly as part of Weather Report, later listening to his solo recordings & those with the Jazz Messengers.

That's two of my heroes gone today. Suspect the other one will be announced soon.

I feel a few days of Shorter in the car coming on, especially Weather Report.

I’m no jazz fan but Wayne Shorter was someone I could listen to all day. RIP.

Such a talent. Funnily enough I was listening to Joni Mitchell's classic 'Both Sides Now' (the fantastic 2000 version) only last week and was entranced by the simple but haunting sax riffs. Turned out to be none other than the great Wayne Shorter. RIP.

Think I read that he played on 10 Joni Mitchell albums, he also appears on discs by Steely Dan, Carlos Santana & many more

Likely the same tour I saw - Usher Hall, Edinburgh with John Patitucci on bass. Can't remember who the other two were but it was a superb performance. I've loved Wayne's playing since I bought weather report's live 8:30 album in 1979  but got into him in a big way when I started working through Miles' back catalogue.

2023 isn't looking too good for musicians I hold in high regard.

Was listening to him on Spotify last night. Such talent and the range of people he played with is huge.

Nice selection of tracks - thanks for posting

The following might be of interest. The first is a Tweet by Corey Mwamba, presenter of Freeness*. The BBC links are to tributes on other Radio 3 programmes; Jazz Record Requests & J to Z (upcoming).

https://twitter.com/coreymwamba/status/1508162025054167044 (includes YouTube link): Listen to Wayne Shorter improvise an accompaniment to Miles Davis' solo on Ron Carter's "Mood". How Shorter supports and reinforces both harmony and (improvised) melody. The theme is played by Hancock (piano) at the beginning.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001l4fq (22 April 2023: 90 mins) Playing landmark recordings and rarities, Julian [Joseph] charts Wayne Shorter’s phenomenal career – from his days with Art Blakey and Miles Davis to his work with Weather Report and beyond. We’ll also hear extracts from an interview Julian recorded with Wayne in 2004, which gives a window into the openness, warmth and playfulness of his character, something that always came through in his music.

I think these also give a sense of his character:
