A select rock climbing guidebook is currently being worked on by two local climbers, highlighting the best trad, sport and even some bouldering and DWS suggestions.

We need some additional photographs for the guidebook, ideally of climbers in the following areas, but others are welcomed;

Fall Bay: Yellow Wall, King Wall,
Mewslade; Jacky's Tor (Upper and lower), Block Buttress, Catacomb Gully, Thurba Head
Oxwich Quarries
The Tors and Three Cliffs; The great Tor, Three Cliffs, Popples, Odins Wall
Pennard
Pwll Ddu

A facebook page has been set up which may be the easiest way to share your photos. If your facebook averse, perhaps reply or message me with a link where you've uploaded the photo somewhere?

I'm afraid I can't offer a free book should a photo be selected, so your reward would be having your photo published.

Thanks for looking at the post, and hope to see your shots soon.

Regards

There is a suitable guide for the Gower!

In reply to Pylon King: We all know i cant cope with that guide. I am from the Rockfax generation

In reply to Pylon King: Sorry I do have to agree with Steve here :s Its not great haha :p

In reply to stvredmond:

It's a perfectly good (and quite funny) guide. Hope the new one doesn't loose any of the humour. Steve, I'll drop you a line about doing some climbing down the Gower.

In reply to mattrm: i wouldnt say perfectly. its an adequate guide but my god its hard work to use and full of stuff which is so outdated and choss ridden and to be fair covers way to big of an area. Needs splitting in to about 3 diff books or small volumes.

In reply to stvredmond:

Difficult to say when it'll be out, areas are still be written at the moment. The wet evenings are aiding the progress! Sometime late in 2012 as an initial guess, but first draft is not complete, then it needs to go to the editors and publishers, and we have no experience of that process. So as a best guess late 2012 perhaps early 2013.

Photos anyone?

That does seem incredibly impecunious.

It's being done by a club (SWMC), so yeah we're hardly rolling in cash.

Not even the cost of a handfull of guidebooks?

OP stuwelly85 25 Oct 2011
In reply to MJ:

This guide is separate from SWMC, it's not from a club, just two local climbers.

I'm afraid we haven't got the finances to offer a guide for every photo we use. I felt this needed to be explained from the start, sorry if it deters people from sending in photos, I'd rather be up front about it all.

Absolutely best to be up front about it. Having a rough idea (not my dept!) about the economics I would have thought 'giving away' 10-20 books to the contributors would have been a good move, it might get more and better shots submitted?

That's what I initially thought from your original thread. The post from mattrm is incorrect then: -

It's being done by a club (SWMC), so yeah we're hardly rolling in cash. ?

In reply to Chris Craggs:

Quite possibly, it's an entirely new process for us, never done this sort of thing before, lets see what happens.

In reply to stuwelly85: Look forward to seeing the end result. will be nice to have a shiny guidebook devoted to the Gower instead of having to lug around the MASSIVE South east wales and gower one.

Good Luck

Out of interest, why are the SWMC no longer doing it?

Considering that businesses like Rockfax and Ground Up offer free guides to all helpers and contributors and still make a profit then I'm sure you can too. If not is guide really financially viable.

In reply to Tom Ripley:

Rockfax and Ground Up also have a vast 'back catalogue' and are well established guidebook writers or business' as you point out, so perhaps have the cash about to be able to provide such an incentive. Me personally to finance 10 to 20 books would be in the order of £200 - £300, which I haven't got I'm afraid.

Thanks for the photos so far, will be in touch.
