The Lowther Estate, which owns land around Grasmere and the mere itself is planning to moor a number of what they call “gentleman’s yachts”  for rent on the mere.

I have just written to the LDNP to protest at this appalling idea. I hope they will be inundated with such letters. If you also would like to protest you can email planning@lakedistrict.gov.uk  FAO Julie Birkett. There is also a petition

Last time I tried to moor my "gentleman's yacht" my wife claimed to have a headache, rolled over, and went to sleep (pretty sure she simply considered it an appalling idea too).

More seriously, I'll look into adding my voice to the protest.

So the estate will apply for permission for ten, get knocked back, reduce that to four and get permission. They will, as the papers suggest, be party boats and sound carries very clearly over still water.

Had you cleaned the bow? Scraped off the barnacles?

I can imagine your outrage, Lord Smythe and similar who picked a bargain second home in Grasmere for a bargain price of £795k(using his annual bonus), which they visit twice a year, could easily see at least 5% knocked off its value.

Just accept Grasmere is for certain folk, those who only walk 1/2km in a £500 waterproof, coach trips to tea rooms etc..let them have the development, and leave the rest of the places alone.

Just discovered my email to LDNP has bounced. That was the address they gave me over the phone. One way of limiting your email burden I suppose.

Do they still hire out rowing boats on the lake ? Paddle power seems more fiting for the smaller lakes.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/jan/23/lake-district-plan-to-moor-... :

"Plans to moor holiday boats on the shores of Grasmere in the Lake District national park have been withdrawn in a move described as a huge victory for community activism."

It was on BBC North West Tonight, last week I think. Lowther Estates have bowed to public opinion and withdrawn the idea. I suppose they'll be looking for some other essential (for their bank balance) ideas to enhance the region now.
