Has anyone done any trekking  in the High Tatras? I'm wondering how well it is set up for getting around without a car. Ideally looking at a week or so trekking, with some scrambling being a bonus.

I've got the cicerone guide on the way, but any knowledge would be appreciated

This may not be much help, but it's much better terrain with plenty of huts on the Slovak side.

They really have the best of Vsoky Tatry

Cheers, I'll expand my research to both sides then

It was 18 years ago but we did it  by train on the slovak side. We used the light railway to move between towns and the little mountain funicular a couple of times.

If you can get to Zakopane, you should be fine to do lots of trekking from the village. I was able to do Orla Perc in a long day from our house (although I think I got a ride back from the end, not sure).

Thanks a lot guys - the railway seems a good option, and a fun way to travel.

We have a scheming session booked for Thursday

Don't go in the main season (i.e. Polish summer holidays) if you can avoid it, as the High Tatras are only a small range and will be completely overrun. If you are not looking for Alpine climbing, the adjacent lower ranges will be much better for nature trekking. Also, +1 for not forgetting the Slovak side,
