As a side-trip to some work events in Greece, going to grab a few days to look round the Peleponnese - possibly around Sparti etc.

Any info on some climbing locations would be gratefully received. Also, a recommendation from a cheap as chips car hire equally welcome.

Cheers!

Haven't used car hire in that area but have used easyterra.com and Abbycar from Athens airport a few times with great service

The climbing is at Lagada in the Taygatos mountains, nice place and scenery. Good climbing and bolted like mad (it was done as an EU tourist project and the guy was paid per bolt not route). There used to be a guidebook from the local Alpine club but nowadays who knows?

Leonidio is on the Pelopponese and very much the current "in" location. Also mostly south facing and an autumn-winter venue though, would probably be too hot now. The logbook stats page suggests the season's pretty much over by May: https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/crags/leonidio_area_a-20187/#stats

Sparta itself is of no real interest, it's got the ubiquitous temple stuff but same as everywhere. Got an olive oil museum though. The place to see in the near is Mystras which is full-on Greek ruins and thankfully higher in the mountains so generally cooler. Climbing wise Kiparissia is nearer than Leonidhion but not as near as Lagada and hotter. Otherwise zap down to the Mani (the "finger" below Sparta) and look at the old villages, freaky!

The two crags nearest Sparta (on Mt Taygetus - the highest point in the Peloponnese - 2,407m), are both highly recommended (though be wary of possible car crime spot at Lagada)

Nedousa https://rockaroundtheworld.co.uk/2017/10/08/nedousa/

and Lagada https://rockaroundtheworld.co.uk/2017/10/07/lagada/

There's a tonne of less well-known climbing elsewhere in the Peloponnese, in addition to the world class offerings at Leonidio. Info on all the crags that feature in the selected climbs guide and a couple that don't https://rockaroundtheworld.co.uk/category/greece/peloponnese/ Zobolo and Kardamyli are well worth seeking out.

Enjoy! Cheers, Dom
