Hello!

I'm coming to the UK for a couple of weeks and I'm interested in doing some seaside climbing. I'll be staying in Poole with some access to a car.

I have experience leading 5.9-5.10 trad and would love to do some more but I'm fully overwhelmed by the amount of climbing in the Dorset area (And I won't have my rack with me).

So, what climbing areas do I need to go to, and any recommendations for guiding services that will take me out to lead?

Let me know if I put this post in the wrong place!

Thanks,

Tyler

For trad forget Portland and the outliers, Swanage is the place to go. A car would be useful but not necessary, there is a frequent bus service, Breezer 40, from Poole that passes nearmost of the parking spots for climbing asking the coast, for the Eastern end of the cliffs the 5 from Swanage  takes you to Durlston and the approach to the Boulder Ruckle, Swansea premier crag.

For partners try the Dorset climbers page on fb

For your first visit consider scaling back your ambition to 5.8/5.9, trad at Swanage is pretty daunting! It's steep, committing, not totally solid, above the sea, and totally magnificent.

If you want instruction / guiding then either;

https://portland-climbing.co.uk/about-us.php

or

http://www.youngsadventuresolutions.co.uk/

should be able to help you out. Both excellent instructors and very experienced along the Dorset Coast.

Also http://www.jbmountainskills.co.uk/ is very good I hear. He used to be in Dorset but I think is based mainly in North Wales now.

Have fun.

TJB.

Given the season, trying some of the deep water soloing would be something a bit different to do on your visit?
