Is Scopello a sensible base for getting to crags (eg San Vito)? Possibly end of October/beginning of November.

Google says a 50 min drive - the roads are bit tortuous.

Why not stop in San Vito, the town or the campsite - then the climbing is either a 5 min drive, or on your doorstep?

What's San Vito like...that time of year?

In reply to CPH:

Only been there in Feb/March - the town was 90% shut - just a few restaurants open. The campsite had a couple of dozen climbers there, mostly stopping in the mobile homes,

Scopello is really shut by then and about half an hours drive.
San Vito is still more or less open, the trendy boutiques, the ice cream parlours and the beachware shops are usually shut but all the normal stuff is open. How many restaurants are still running is a question of the dates really but there will be a few for sure as there should be plenty of climbers around.
The climbing festival is 12-15th October.

Agree - we went to San Vito in November / December a couple of years ago and it wasn't exactly buzzing but you could do your shopping and get a beer and a pizza.

In reply to Ramblin dave:

It´ s like most summer tourist towns out of season, they actually look more shut than they really are because all the prime sites are boarded up but none of them usually sell anything climbers are interested in anyway. The supermarkets, back street hardware stores and the rest are still there though. The number of climbers etc has improved things in San Vito immensely, when we first went there were two restaurants which alternated their opening days and that was it! The pizza shop didn´ t exist and there were no bars. The restaurant "extensions" also disappeared the last weekend of September and the main street was a bleak affair when the wind howled.

I'm not really sure where this is but it was opened by some climbers I met out there a few years ago. Really nice guys and likely where I'll stay in the future.
