I will be heading to Taiwan for 3 weeks in August and I'm hoping to spend a fair bit of time in the national parks and mountains, trekking etc (maybe climbing if its worth bringing gear).

Has anyone got any recommendations on how to do it/ must visit destinations etc? My only restrictions at the moment are flights in and out of Taipei.

Cheers

My son lives in Taipei and has been telling me we must do the Holy Ridge next time I go out there. Plenty of info on the web. Climbing wise, there doesn't seem to be a lot but the coast North of Taipei looks interesting; check out -  https://taiwanrocks.net/category/outdoor/  as a good starting point. Plenty of indoor/outdoor walls in Taipei. Expect it to be pretty hot in August. Public transport in Taipei is excellent. Good train service nationwide. Getting about on scooter is good fun and reasonably priced. Must see; Taroko Gorge on a bike or scooter. Looks like it would yield a huge amount of amazing climbs but not developed and probably not allowed. There are lots of Mountain trails both in the Taroko National Park and else where in the hilly/mountainous regions. The Taiwanese are great. Plenty of English spoken in the cities but little in the countryside.  Food is fantastic and very cheap if you avoid anywhere smart looking. Go enjoy.

A friend of mine lived there for over 20 years, led a hiking group and wrote guidebooks. It looks like a stunning place to hike. You can get some ideas from his websites or books:
