Apologies if this has been posted before (but I can't see it). Amazing footage of an avalanche in Switzerland yesterday:

Crazy! That little house looks like it got a lucky escape too!

That little house is where it is for a reason.

It's marked as "Plan God Nair" on the map:

https://map.geo.admin.ch/?lang=en&topic=ech&bgLayer=ch.swisstopo.pi...

Note that it's to the west of the obvious avalanche zones - two of which are even called "Laviner da l'aua" and "Laviner Lad". Laviner = avalanche.

No doubt one day it will be wiped out but the historical record suggests that it's in a relatively safe place.

For a good example of a 500 year avalanche event check out the February 1999 events in the Val d'Herens which wiped out several buildings that were supposed to be completely safe.

Some more sobering coverage, of the 1951 avalance tragedy in Andermatt, Switzerland, in this feature:

Not in english obviously, but you get the picture.

Looks like the chopper is firing something to set them off.

In reply to paul mitchell:

Heli-dropped timed charges or howitzers, probably - preemptive avalanche control.  Quite possibly there is a hamlet or an important road or ski-resort downslope to protect. Safe release of snow buildup before it could get big enough to endanger it. Quite spectacular, though, I'll give you that

Quite dramatic, lots of powder... Look at this one, especially after the last charge goes off at about 20 seconds, the way it propagates rightwards across the rest of the mountain is just frightening! https://www.facebook.com/WCAXTV/videos/304349610426488/
