The hut system in the Dolomites is different in as much as many huts are privately owned by individuals, rather than a club. I would suggest camping right outside a private hut would not be met with rapturous applause and greetings. CAI huts, maybe less so, but in principle, wild camping in the Dolomites is actually illegal, so probably not the best idea. That said, discretely located behind a boulder, no one is going to care or bother you. I think it is more about camping where visible close to roads they are more worried about.
