Hi!

I'm a fifth year medical student and I'm trying to plan my elective for April-May 2019, which I would love to have an expedition/mountaineering focus. Would anyone have any ideas/contacts of how to get onto an expedition or interesting hospitals/clinics situated in the mountains? I would ideally like to go to south or central America but anywhere would be great really. I am a keen climber and have done a small amount of mountaineering, and I speak french to a fairly good level.

Cheers

Dan

The World Extreme Medicine show in Edinburgh, 23rd to 25th of November, would be a good place to find contacts. There's a 'how to get your first expedition medic job' lecture on day one.

Try contacting the British mountain Medicine Society who may put out a posting on their peer to peer E mail group which will reach over 300 mountain medicine doctors many of whom have experience of working abroad.

See: https://thebmms.org/contact  .

Consider working in  UK relevant hospital such as The Belford in Fort William to really build up your hill skills.

Good luck

When I accompanied a patient to the belford, we spent as much time discussing the climbing as the symptoms.

Must have been a quiet night

I've heard good things about these electives http://www.ippg.net/

Not strictly an expedition but gives really easy access to big mountains and treks, plus you'll see a lot of altitude-related illnesses
