Myself and a friend are returning to Chamonix after 4 years of training. Has anyone trekked from Les Houches to the Têtte Rouse Hut? If so I’m thinking 2 days tell me if I am wrong. We are carrying minimal bivvy gear to camp near the Tette Rouse Hut.

We do not want to use the tram or cable car.

Any information on this approach is much appreciated

Hi Jaymac

Personally I would (and did!) take the cable car from Les Houches to Bellevue then the tram to the Eagles Nest before a leisurely 2 to 3 hours walk to the Tete Rousse Hut. However it is certainly possible to walk the whole way and should take less than a day as follows:

Some timings of the sections in the following old post on UKC:

And as a shameless plug a wee video I made of an ascent of Mont Blanc via the Gouter showing all the main landmarks or features encountered along the way from a few years ago:

Hope this helps and bon chance!

I have walked from Bellevue up to Tete Rousse (Tram was broken so walked up the tracks). About 4 hours at a leisurely pace.

Not sure how long the walk is up from Les Houches, but i'm sure the whole thing can be done in 1 day.

One year when I was young, fit and acclimatized, I starting walking from Les Houches at about 7am or so, and got to the Gouter Hut (via the Tete Rousse obviously) at about 3pm as I recall. I then stayed there for the evening, set off about 3am or so, got to the summit at about 8am, and then carried on over to the Midi. (That was in October by the way, and I had the entire route more-or-less to myself.)

So it's easily possible if you're going okay.
