Maybe they'll take a look at Bare Faced Grills next!

I have met Børge Ousland - he's The Man!

No time for social media wannabee hype!

I read this this morning and was going to post here too, glad I searched first!

What load of absolute horseshit this fella has been spouting.  I'm really glad that an organisation as reputable as Nat Geo have called him out on this.

I know they do programmes with Bear Grylls and he's a bit of a blowhard, but he's not in the same league as this guy.

Wow. I assume they have a crack team of lawyers at their disposal! (have to say I'd not heard of O'Brady before)

I'd be interested to hear what our resident Antarctic expert, Damo, has to say about this.

he's quoted in the article

“O’Brady needs to be called out for his false claims,” says writer Jon Krakauer.

I’m sure O’Brady had a jolly adventure, that’s not the problem is it? It’s spin and what you claim.

Is it still schadenfreude if the misfortune is deserved and the 'victim' comes across as a bit of a knob? Or is it something else I'm feeling?

.... and he's got a glacier named after him too! How cool is that?

A really interesting post, as ever, from Damo here:

I guess you've worked it out by now "our" Damo is Damien Gildea! So he's quoted through the article. This is why when Damo comments on one of my gear reviews I take his thoughts very seriously! Not many people who can drop into conversation lines like "yeah, its a pretty good bag to -40 but I wouldn't push it much beyond that"!

 Frank R. 04 Feb 2020
In reply to kamala:

I remember reading Gildea's blog post about it - it was great! I just had a bit of a deja vu with this new NatGeo article, as I thought "I know that, having read about it somewhere, about a year ago", so thanks for the reminder

It's a sad state of things when marketing triumphs over genuine achievements like Ousland's and others.

You're welcome.

It's always a pleasure to read well-written posts that show such a depth of knowledge as Damo's do, so they tend to stick in the mind...

Quite liked this passage from the article:

"creating criteria for ever-more finely sliced accomplishments and using subtle new qualifiers to claim sponsor- and media-friendly “firsts.”"

This is nothing new, I've boasted for years about being the best climber on my street.

Though warmer than a few years ago, obviously...
