Sad news coming out of Nepal. Nine climbers feared dead in Himalayas after storm at Mt Gurja

Saw this in the news, very sad.

I was wondering though, how would a storm kill those people? Surely they would just hunker down in tents.. unless the winds were powerful enough to destroy the tents?

Not had any much experience of unfriendly weather so can’t get my head around what has happened here.

Reading the description, an avalanche sounds far more likely. They can be triggered by storms.

It is now apparent that it wasn't an avalanche which destroyed the camp but a shock wave - wind, probably created after a serac collapse. Similar to the 'wind' that occurred at Everest BC following the 2015 avalanche.
