Stakes on Mont Blanc?

Christophe Profit found himself in court this week accused of stealing stakes last summer.  A debate that wouldn't be out of place in the UK.  How much "stuff" should there be on mountains?

I have some sympathy with him.  But if he loses he risks being 4000 euros poorer.
