/ Wanted: The Roaches (Roches) by Dave Salt
My Dad mentioned the other night he'd love to get his hands on a copy of what he thinks was a 1970's guide to the Roaches (I believe it was without the A then) that he had when he first started climbing.
I know this is a very long shot but has anyone got a copy they'd be happy to sell.
I've found and purchased "Rock climbs in the Peak district : Staffordshire Gritstone Area" by Dave Salt, but i'm unsure if that is the correct one , my Dad thinks it was a purple large book but cannot be sure.
Hi, it's Rock Climbs on the Roches and Hen Cloud by David Salt and does have a purple card cover. Good luck with the search, it is a difficult one.
Thank you. fingers crossed I can find one.
Hi I have a copy I bought as a 19 yr old I am now 71. It is one of my treasured possessions I occasionally go up to the roaches and take it with me. I am fortunate to have done a lot of the climbs in my twenties. I don’t want to part with it but I am more than willing to let you have it to browse through and maybe copy some of the pages obviously I would like it back
My 1973 copy of Staffordshire Gritstone Area by Dave Salt is white with blue edging and covered in plastic and cost £1.70.
Thank you , that is very kind of you!
I've inquired with a few book traders and will see what this brings firstly.
As others have said. Good luck.
I've been collecting guidebooks since 2005 and I haven't found a copy, moreover I've never even seen one.
Im fairly certain a copy has never been advertised for sale by any book dealer (either on online markets or by those specialising in mountaineering/climbing) in the last decade, so I'm not convinced any of them will be able to help.
Best option is likely to try and track down any active climbers from that era like rodw and see if anyone (or their family) has a copy they would be happy to pass on.
Wow . Sure seems I’ve got my work cut out then! Be great if I could land one.
A 55 page guide was produced by the North Staffs Mountaineering Club (David Salt) in August 1968. The title was Rock Climbs on the Roches & Hen Cloud, and it cost 7/6. The cover was a dull purple, with a sketch of Hen Cloud on the front.
Also in 1968 another guide (42 pages) was produced by the Alpha Mountaineering Club (John Smith). The title was A Climbers' Guide To The Staffordshire Roaches and Hen Cloud Area, and it cost 12/6. The cover was white, with a black and white picture of the Sloth on the front.
Best of luck in your search for an unwanted copy of the David Salt guide.
If anybody fancies leaving me a copy in their will that would also be great!
