So, a new study says we can all save thousands by buying a 3D printer and printing stuff instead of buying it.

Lucky that, I was just in the market for a trad rack, now I can print up all my own cams and hexes from molten plastic instead!

I can almost see that Darwin award on my mantlepiece already...

Why are you printing in plastic?

You can already find 3D printers working in metals and alloys and printing in liquid metal is already happening in research.

No Darwin awards here.

I had the same reaction when I heard about a company 3D printing derailleur hangers. Turns out there's a world of difference between industrial 3D printing (titanium) and 'home' 3D printing (soft plastic).

I'm afraid that the printed parts would most likely cost you more than the "real" mass produced parts, especially once you amortised the cost of the machine.

3D printing is most useful for getting small numbers of difficult shaped things made quickly.

...and that's before considering mechanical integrity etc, etc...

In reply to Marek: That's interesting, do you know who makes them? I had to get a replacement hanger from goldtec (I think), it was £20, a replacement frame was £100!
