After a big bill today buying B&Q bolts ...
http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?isSearch=true&fh_search=B%26Q+Anc...

... i've decided to do some research and find the cheapest place to buy bolts when not using the bolt fund.

Where IS the cheapest place in the UK to buy bolts?

Bolts for what?

This has to be a troll, right?

In reply to ERU: why do you want to buy this type of expansion bolt? the size of hole you have to drill is significantly larger than the diameter of the protruding shaft and if you want to use standard hangers which are designed to fit over a 10mm shaft you will end up drilling with something like a 16mm bit! You will also end up paying for a lot of extra metal.

I would suggest you buy 10mm through bolts instead. These are loads cheaper and will have an equivalent holding power except in upside down placements where the load is directly outward and where the additional grip of an expansion bolt is safer.

If you are putting any bolt in make sure its stainless and that you use stainless hangers of the same grade. Anything else WILL corrode, will look dodgy after 5 years and will probably be dodgy after 10.

I suggest you do an internet search to get the best price. Stainless 10mm through bolts should be about £1.70 a pop if you buy at least 50.

Best of all, as you probably know, are resin bolts but these are a lot more expensive.

If you are at all unsure about placing bolts there are some good people at the BMC who will be pleased to provide you with detailed advice based on proper research/test pulls etc.

Cheers for the reply. Scroll down I linked a basic search on their site i think you referred to the first hit.

This isn't an option at the moment.

To clarify. I'm after 10mm (maybe some 8mm to use up older hangers) M10 stainless bolts for equipping routes. I've done the internet search thing but have also decided to ask others where they buy their bolts and determine a cheaper source.

Cheers for the reply. Scroll down or turn the page I linked a basic search on their site I think you referred to the first hit. B&Q actually selling the same wedge bolts as Petzl-Charlet do.

This isn't an option at the moment due to a few factors.

Bridge? I'm just asking where the cheapest place to get bolts in the UK is?

In reply to Lurking Dave: Agreed, but just in case have you considered staples and glue?

Nothing in that first link is anywhere near up to a climbing application.

Don't "use up" 8mm bolts; leave them for static loads in caving!

try hear? Think 12mm, 120mm stainless bolts as the minimum spec for placements that won't need replacing in 5years time. Don't be a cheapskate when buying bolts either, only for them to need replacing in no time at all.

In reply to ERU: What about stress corrosion cracking, I don't think through bolts or expansion bolts are a good idea at all in the UK climate - even stainless bolts corrode (unless they are of the highest quality stainless steel). Replacing anchors that have failed makes a mess (more holes) and is potentially dangerous (failure). Resin bolts should be the standard.

Maybe the link I posted didn't work but what I attempted to link was exactly the same as the ones shown in your link i.e. stainless wedge bolts.
Cheers for the link - that is a good price.

Anyone able to get it lower?

In reply to Dominic Green:

Resin bolts with tight nuts would still be prone to stress corrosion cracking in an environment that would cause it in through bolts (stress, chloride, elevated temperature).

As I understand it we don't have the high temperatures in the uk for this to be a big problem (though I guess locally on some dark south facing sea cliffs it is just about conceivable).

Actually, ignore me. I guess you're talking about glue-ins with a pre-formed eye.
