Cleaning boots - Wet or Dry?

Having a discussion with my neighbour (dog walkers) about cleaning walking boots.

He prefers to clean his as soon as he gets in, while mud and boots are still wet.

Myself, I prefer to let them mud dry and give them a proper going over, with a firm brush.

I can understand why he does it wet, because he needs them ASAP, for the next day.

But made me think what other people do? Muddy, wet day out in the mountains. Do you get home and clean your boots there and then? Or let it all dry and clean the dry mud off?

If your boots are so muddy that the need a proper clean, you're best off washing the mud off under a running tap rather than using a brush; whether you choose to let the boots dry first so you can knock a bit more mud off them is up to you.

Rinse boots in clean water before it drys. Some mud like peat can eat into the material, specially leather. I would have thought using a stiff brush on dry mud would be unnecessarily rough on your boots.
