I have a bright green rucksack which I want to dye black (long story).
Does anyone have any experience doing this, or similar? It looks like I would need to boil it in dye rather than using cold water?
Is it cotton or nylon or polyester?

I don't think it's likely to work unless it's an old fashioned cotton one.
Synthetic fabric won't take the colour easily if at all.
There's a thread on backpacking light.com about this. Some very successful outcomes with nylon packs. Not so with polyester.

to be honest, even if it ends patchy you've got a unique bit of gear that will probably grow on you
I haven't tried this, but hopefully it's more suitable for synthetic fabric. http://www.thedyeshop.co.uk/product_information.php?cPath=3&products_id...
Spray it?

Go mad with a pack of Sharpies.
I did think that might be extremely effective, if time consuming.
Ah, useful - thanks.
It's definitely nylon
The one I linked to above should work well on nylon. Have you got a big enough old saucepan?!
Let us know how you get on.
I do - just got to finish off my crabapple jelly!
Will let you know how it goes......
Just buy a black one - less faff surely????
Shopping is faff.
