Does anyone know of a good gps tracker that would work well in the andes?
Looking for something to send signals back to family in the uk when on my trip.
Thanks.

In reply to Pete23: I'm looking to get something from these guys http://www.inreachdelorme.com/ for similar reasons. Would be interested if anyone has direct experience of using one.

We are testing some of these for D of E,

Seem to work in the North of England (! OK, not that remote!), coverage for S.America as well so I see. Check out the data connection/ satellite subscription cost for the service you want, the full works can be a lot for a whole year.
Looks like you can hire.

Yes, get a Spot. You'll get your own auto generated web page where they can track your progress.

In reply to Jonny2vests: sorry for thread hijack. Are there any other costs involved after you get your spot device? Like satellite service fee or something along those lines?

Yes, its subscription based, no idea what the cost is in the UK. Details here:

In reply to Pete23: I've got a Delorme InReach SE which I used in the Russian Caucasus this year. Tracking seemed to work ok and I was able to send and receive SMS messages for weather reports and such things. There were a few issues with my handset which was replaced promptly. Should prove useful this Winter when out in the North-West Highlands for a few days. Any questions just ask. =o)

In reply to Pete23: Thanks for all the info! Looks like hiring a spot for a month would suit me best. Cheers
