My rope which is about one year old now has a few areas which have flattened along its length. Is this something to be concerned about and what are the reasons for this? ...is there a website that covers gives good technical info on ropes and climbing gear in general? Cheers

In reply to dave gw:

How do you store your ropes? if you hang them this can crete flat spots.

Have you had any falls on the rope? Damaged core can lead to flat spots.

Do you use the rope on snadstone or on sea cliffs, abrasive materials getting into the core can damage it.

mammut site has some info on rope care etc.

I would recommend you go to this page http://www.thebmc.co.uk/theshop/asp/product.asp?product=62&iCount=0 and order the BMC Ropes and Care and Maintenance technical booklets. There's a fair amount of other useful info elsewhere within the BMC's web site as well.

Many things can cause flat spots. If you haven't had any reallyy big lobs, or it wasn't caused by lobbing with the rope over an edge, its probably OK at only a year old.

In reply to dave gw: Do you use a Grigri for belaying ? THey can cause flat spots when loaded heavily.
