My half ropes need retiring sadly and to save cash I am thinking of buying just one half rope instead of two, when i need to use double ropes i will just use my 10mm single and the half. save myself a £100! anyone do this? just wondering if there are any issues regarding the diameters. prob looking at 8.5mm for the half maybe 8.3. Ta.

In reply to ray:
for shorter single pitch stuff you can just tie in to both ends of a half rope.

I don't think there is likely any issues with using two 10mm single ropes as a half rope if you so desired! Apparently loading two ropes equally as compared two one rope only increases the peak max force by about 10-20% on the climber so unlikely to be an issue with modern ropes.

What's wrong with your old ropes?

In reply to CurlyStevo: they are old now (over 10yrs) and are showing it.
In reply to ray: Nothing wrong with you are suggesting, but it won't be as nice as using two half ropes.

If you shop around online you can find a pair of half ropes for £150, maybe less if you find a real bargain.

Have you considered a triple rated rope? http://www.ukclimbing.com/gear/review.php?id=3765 More models and makes have come out since Toby's review. If you get one slim and long enough you can just double it up when you need to and use it for extreme sport on-sights, while saving your 10 mm for everything else. Just a thought.
