I am a relatively new hiker and I am currently considering some new footwear. I have never had any problems with my ankles and I regard myself as fit and healthy. That being said, does anyone recommend the vibram five fingers (ascent model)? I would be grateful if anyone had any advice in this regard.
Thank you

I have had many pairs of five fingers over the years and am a big fan of the soft and light models like the Classics for everyday use, road running and light trail use (e.g. Llanberis path up Snowdon). If you wear them round a slate quarry you will bruise your feet unless you have spent a long time adapting to them. The more rugged models, like the Treks, I am less of a fan of, because the increased thickness and protection makes them less flexible and more like expensive versions of regular shoes with toe cut-outs, which don't give you the ability to move your toes much but risk getting them caught on something.

Light, low cut, close-to-the-ground shoes are definitely the way to go though.
