I'm looking for a free GPS app (or apps) for both iPhone and Android that will supply an 8 figure UK grid reference. I don't need it to do anything else. I think I've found one for Android here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.blerg&hl=en_GB but I'm struggling to find one for iPhones. It needs to be free and simple as it is for 11/12 year olds in school.

Yeah, that grid ref app is excellent - very quick and simple.

Don't know if it's too complex, but the OS Locate app (for both Android and iThings) is pretty good and includes a really nice compass as well.

I like the OS locate but I need one that gives an 8 figure reference as 6 is not accurate enough for the activity.

I use memory map but it's not simple or free.
Did find coordination by Daniel Tull which seems to work.

Not sure I have seen an 8 figure one in an app, I am guessing that to do with the base GPS accuracy of the device ?

In reply to Dark-Cloud:
Some apps / devices give 10 fig references but this is a little misleading as I think +/-10m is roughly the level of accuracy the system can provide.

Have a look at Gridpoint GB that should be what your looking for.

I looked at that and its currently broken on ios9
In reply to DaveHK:

GB Grid Converter should do the job. Not been updated for a while but is working fine on iOS7, with ten digits.

Modern GPS modules can produce 3 meters accuracy. If it's double GPS/GLONASS module it can be even better because it uses both American and Russian independent positioning systems. Doing so increases accuracy by 0.4 coefficient.

Double modules are installed in all iPhones starting from 4S.

I use viewranger with my Year 6s. It's free and national park maps are free to download. Gives 8 fig ref and altitude. I have it on Android and iPad.
