Hi all,

After a lot of deliberation I decided that I would like to do the summer ML training in the near future. However, I am not a member of any association and never recorded any of my experience formally. Therefore I have few questions to all of you who already went through this process.

1) Do I need to belong to any association before I register with Mountain Training and obtain a log book? If so then which one is best? I am in Scotland.

2) Does only experience (hill days) after the start of the log book counts?

3) Do you have any recommended trainer / school to do the course? I seen prices to vary widely - for me cost is less important but the quality of the course the most important.

Thank you.

Best bet is to have a read through the Mountain Training website, it's really user friendly and clear which is ace: https://www.mountain-training.org

1. To register you'll need to be a member of the BMC / MS / MI, you can join via the Mountain Training registration page.

2. Previous experience counts too.

3. There's loads of great providers, I'm slightly biased though so I'll recommend myself! https://www.jbmountainskills.co.uk

Happy to answer any other questions!

Thank you so much. Is there any benefit of BMC / MS / MI of one over another?

Also, do I understand well that the process involves 6 days of training and then separately 5 days of assessment?

Thank you

No worries!

The simplistic answer is the difference is where your money ends up. I'm in Wales so the BMC represents me best out of them so that's who I'm a member of.

Yep that's right. 6 days training, 5 days assessment, with a consolidation period in the middle.

I don't think I've done a video on ML training, but here's one about the assessment week that might be of interest   youtube.com/watch?v=7mX1smhNaNQ&

Wow what a great video Jez, absolutely fantastic with regards to information given. Shame you are not in Scotland.

Thank you again and take care!

Pleasure!

If you're looking in Scotland I'd check out Sandy at Scotch on the Rocks, he'll put on an ace course.

Jez is bang on all counts there. Please join MScot as the relevant body representing hillgoers in Scotland. You're registration will be with Mountain Training Scotland if you put in  a Scottish address. I second the recommendation for Sandy and his team at Scotch on the Rocks. There is a friendly FB Group for Scottish Trainee Mountain Leaders (nothing to stop you joining ASAP if you are planning to register): https://www.facebook.com/groups/448242352278918/

My advice; don't be put off by the DLog. You probably don't know what I'm talking about right now. But you will!!!

Is the one used for ML the same as the one they were using for SPA a few years ago? I found it easiest to import a spreadsheet with the details pre-entered, my laptop would have been defenestrated if I had to enter individual routes into D Log!

My suggestion would be to do the training & assessment with the same provider- lots available.

Also consider joining a local mountaineering club- https://www.mountaineering.scot/find-a-club
