I've just pitched an idea to a magazine where I seek out the most remote spot in North Wales and after looking at maps I'm a bit stumped!

My arbitrary criteria is that is has to be away from A and B roads, not in a forest and my initial findings based on a cursory look at the map is that it may well be situated within the block of land north of Rhobell Fawr and south of Arenig Fawr but I could wrong.

That being the case (or not) how the hell do I work it out?

I'm looking for a 3 metre square as defined by the what3words app.

I think the most remote spot (maybe most remote hill - can’t remember) in Wales is actually in South Wales, that’s if you take it as most remote from a road. It’s in the western Brecon Beacons.

This is the kind of thing (distance from road, not in forest) that GIS will solve in an instant. Contact someone in the forestry dept at Bangor (Jeremy Williams was the expert when I was there).

Though not in North Wales, I also recall visiting the area in the West of the Black Mountain above Dan-yr-Ogof in the Beacons and feeling that it was very isolated.

This is an interesting subject.  I can help with remotest hills and the remotest spot in the whole of Wales, but would have to look into the remotest spot in North Wales.  All hills in Wales have been measured from their summit to the nearest paved public road and Tyle Garw (SN 784 178) is the remotest on the mainland; 4.875km from the nearest paved public road.  The southern grasslands of Mynydd Du also holds the distinction of having the remotest point.  I once visited with a friend, I was jumping up and down when I reached the featureless point, my friend said 'is this it then'.  The Remotest list can be downloaded free of charge; https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwLmpLURefzUemM2WlB4ZGk4LXM/view

ive always found the area around Cnicht to be quiet and remote. also the area around penmachno or to the north of Bala.

I'm not sure if it fits the "what three words" criterion, but Sarn Padrig must be a strong candidate. Depending on the tide, you can be several kilometres out, and certainly very isolated.

The Migneint won't feel remote the weekend after next, it's the venue for the Dark Mountains race so will be full of people buzzing around and floundering in bogs!
