Ankle supports vs boots

Has anyone experience of using ankle supports for rough mountain walking and trekking instead of, or in addition to, the (debatable) support offered by boots alone? Thinking of orthotics rather than taping. If so were they effective and which type did you use?

Do they magically transform low footwear into supportive lightweight boots which can be converted back once reaching easy terrain? Probably not that simple eg footwear may not be roomy enough.

My wife, who is obsessive about walking in the hills, swears by "active ankles ".

She has sprained her ankles a few times and wears orthotic insoles for pronation, which is a different issue.

She's on about her third pair, but gets a a couple of thousand miles out of them.

Thanks. Just looked on internet. Do you know what model of Active Ankle she uses, please?

As it happens I also use custom made heel inserts sometimes for pronation.
