Looking for advice on Hut to hut hike in Europe, we did the TMR a while ago and looking to do more. We loved the Italian huts, especially the food(We are vegetarian and had no problems in italy). How do other countries huts compare? Any particular hike recommended? E.g. Alta via 1in the Dolomites? Or the haute randonnee pyreneenne?

Scandinavian huts are pretty good if you fancied something different. Some are really just wooden bothies, some are manned. Something like the Kungsleden would be excellent.

Thanks, will look into that, looks amazing. Have you done it?

No, but have been in the rough area and used some of the hut network, and its on my own list for one day...

One can do an excellent circuit of the huts in the Picos de Europa in Asturias. Hut/food/beer prices are very reasonable, & the mountains are divine

AV1 is good. One hut more like a hotel. Beer and choice of food at all huts. Small rooms to stay in rather than big dorms.  Easy public transport to start and from end.  11 days end to end if you do the full route.

The Austrian Tyrol is excellent with a fab network of huts. Starting in Neustift nr Insbruck you can do a superb week long tour. The huts are very civilised

Thanks for all of the replies, We Have been to the picos  in Spain, loved it there. We are thinking about hut to hut in May so this seems to rule out a lot of places as the huts don't open for the summer season until June. Thinking now of the Sierra Nevada in Spain for a short trip.

How many days do you want to do? How high do you want to go? I reckon you can hut to hut virtually anywhere in the Alps, but you'll be very restricted if you want to go in May as most won't be open.

Had wanted to go fairly high, hence originally looked at the Alps, looking at 3 to 5 days as an introduction to multi day hikes for our daughter.

I went across the Karwendelgebirge in Austria in early summer last year and had a great time. We went from Scharnitz to Pertisau via the Karwendelhaus and Lamsenjochhütte, with two nights at the Karwendelhaus in order to spend a day doing the Bikkarspitze (2749m)which has a vaguely scrambly finish to it. The day from the Karwendelhaus to the Lamsenjochhütte was pretty long, but there are at least two places to stay in between these two (Falkenhütte?) if you wanted to break it up. Both ends are easily reachable by public transport from Innsbruck, so you could potentially fly to/from there, and take the train to the start and bus+train to get back at the end. The scenery was spectacular throughout, and we had a great time.

Both Stubai Alps and Zillertal Alps excellent. We did the AV2 a few years ago and parts of it weren't nice - long scree slogs, although other parts were good with great scenery.
Also done Haute Route, Tour of Vanoise and GR20. Did part of the Pyrenees Haute Route but were unlucky with the weather.

All good but depends what you want. Unlike old jaunts in France with just cans of kronenbourg in the huts, we liked the Tour of Vanoise. A bit easier than the others, animal life good, the huts were great and beer from local microbreweries in the huts.

Thanks, just checked those huts, seems not open until June, it is looking like may or too early for the Alps. Same with the suggestions like Vanoise! We will keep looking!

Agree, AV 1 in the dollies is a grand outing, going early in the season in June gets you quieter huts, easier to book or just turn up and you get spring flowers and cooler weather.
