Probably the nearest I've been to being zapped.

Huge flash all around me ,and an instant mega loud explosion.

Was followed by the most horrendous hail stones.they were absolutely killing me .

Scary stuff ! I had a similar experience yesterday on mam tor in the peak district . The whole world went electric blue only a few meters to one side and there was a sound like a bomb had gone off ( but miles louder ) .
I'd already been running downhill to get out of harm's way and was slightly concerned as I had a walking pole on my rucksack - and I didn't want to become a human lightning conductor .

Yes ,electric blue .

My concern was that the hill might be one big lightning conductor.

Compasses go a bit awry up there ,because of some magnetic interference

I had the same thing happen to me on the Pennine moors. Not a direct strike but it damn well flattened me and several cows nearby. No one can imagine just how flipping loud it is to be in the middle of a thunderclap. Since then I'm pretty terrified of lightning storms. With good reason.

I was once inside when lightning and thunder seemed to be right overhead. I went out onto the balcony of our 2nd floor flat to have a look. Lightning then struck so close, with such a flash and a bang that I fell over. I don't know how close it actually was, but it took out the electrics of the whole block and our modem (this was 1998) was blackened.

Two of us camping on A93 Saturday night. At about 10pm we saw a flash that seemed to light up the whole world for a millisecond. No noise, no static, nothing but this intense flash....it was well weird.
