As above, I'd like a reasonably comprehensive book on navigation, basics of map work, night and poor weather navigation etc.

Any recommendations welcome.

There is a book later in the series on Navigation, but as you mention 'basics of map work' I'd highly recommend starting with this, the first book in the series - it covers pacing, timing, contours, bearings, etc.

Very useful

As above. Think Cicerone have one called 'map and compass' that might be out of print now but is an option

Another vote for the Peter Cliff book.

Dave

All books on mountain navigation will have a section about adjusting for the difference between grid north and magnetic north. At the moment, in some part of the UK the difference between the two is so small it can be ignored.

For example, for Fort William magnetic north is estimated to be 0 deg 26 min west of grid north.

Have a look at the NNAS Teaching Navigation by Nigel Williams isbn 9781851376087.

A nav book written by and for orienteers that takes a slightly different approach. It covers all of the subject but comes to it from a different direction.
