Strange construction

Seen and walked upon on way up Mount Blair.

Not seen anything like this before. The farm track runs left to right on the top of these stones before taking a right angle over the cave feature and continuing uphill.

That cave feature is not a bridge or tunnel. I wonder if there was a well / spring there once.

Could it be a limekiln? No idea if there's any limestone round there

Is it the remains of a broch?  (Sort of pre-historic fort type things).

Good call. Perhaps filled in now. Maybe the track was used to access the top.

It looks very similar to limekilns down here in north Lancashire and South Lakeland.  Limestone does crop up in all sorts of unexpected places in Scotland. I came across sinks and little bits of outcrops by a stream on the north side of Ben Hiant. Caves have been known on Schiehallion for years.

Initially thought of that but its too massive, no sign of a door ever been in place and its not where I would place an icehouse!

A limekiln was my thought too. There is limestone to the south and east of Mount Blair.

There's a picture of a lime kiln near Kirkmichael which looks fairly similar. See page 16 here https://www.mountblairarchive.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Heriatge_Car_T...

And a mention of lime kilns around the Cateran Trail on page 32 here https://commonculture.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Booklet-that-accomp...  I have now successfully stretched my morning elevenses into lunch break!

Looks almost certain to be a limekiln. The rock even looks like limestone. You'd probably find a depression on the top where the rock and fuel to burn it would be put in. There are lots of them round where I am right now (Silverdale). The top can usually be reached from the slope they are built on or a ramp is built up instead.

Canmore will probably have it recorded.

I'm sure it will be a limekiln.

They usually have the top hole filled in.

That's a secret.

In the centre ground

If it's not a lime kiln and there's bracken in the area, could it be a potash kiln?

OP Flinticus 17 Jul 2021
In reply to Nigel Coe:

Now you're just stirring things up!

There's loads of bracken about.

Looks like the area includes pre-Cambrian metamorphosed limestones.

My thoughts exactly!

If the OP has the grid reference where the photos were taken then they could use the "Zoom To..." feature on that Canmore map page to see what's recorded in the vicinity.

It looks like there's a number of interesting prehistoric remains around Mount Blair but my money would be on the OP's photo being of a disused limekiln.

Seriously?  It takes less than ten second to Google it.

Could it be an overnight campsite for trolls when they're moving from one bridge to another?

In reply to Flinticus:

It's a limekiln. Definitely. Looks just like the ones in Silverdale.

I was thinking an outpost of the Incan Empire.

Don't be daft. It was the Aztecs and Maya who built flat-topped pyramids.
