How are snow levels? is it looking very wet below the snowline?
 BusyLizzie 25 Mar 2013
In reply to An Triubhas: Did you mean to quote TS Eliot? ("... at dawn we came down to a temperate valley,
Wet, below the snowline,
Smelling of vegetation..."

Perhaps apt, since the next line (if I remember correctly) is something like
"... but there was no information".

In reply to An Triubhas:

Pretty sure the snowline is down at road level, certainly was a couple of days ago and it hasnt warmed much since.

In reply to An Triubhas: Ilkley Moor was still soggy under the snow - which was drifting up to 6 foot deep in places yesterday. I'd expect 3 Peaks to be similar.
 PPPatrick 25 Mar 2013
In reply to An Triubhas:

Anyone know about the depth of cover as well as the level? Is it feasible to do some sort of ski tour (without major damage!)?
Tim Chappell 25 Mar 2013
In reply to BusyLizzie:

Here's the information you need:

'A cold coming we had of it,
Just the worst time of the year
For a journey, and such a long journey:
The ways deep and the weather sharp,
The very dead of winter.'
And the camels galled, sorefooted, refractory,
Lying down in the melting snow.
There were times we regretted
The summer palaces on slopes, the terraces,
And the silken girls bringing sherbet.
Then the camel men cursing and grumbling
and running away, and wanting their liquor and women,
And the night-fires going out, and the lack of shelters,
And the cities hostile and the towns unfriendly
And the villages dirty and charging high prices:
A hard time we had of it.
At the end we preferred to travel all night,
Sleeping in snatches,
With the voices singing in our ears, saying
That this was all folly.

Then at dawn we came down to a temperate valley,
Wet, below the snow line, smelling of vegetation;
With a running stream and a water-mill beating the darkness,
And three trees on the low sky,
And an old white horse galloped away in the meadow.
Then we came to a tavern with vine-leaves over the lintel,
Six hands at an open door dicing for pieces of silver,
And feet kiking the empty wine-skins.
But there was no information, and so we continued
And arriving at evening, not a moment too soon
Finding the place; it was (you might say) satisfactory.

All this was a long time ago, I remember,
And I would do it again, but set down
This set down
This: were we led all that way for
Birth or Death? There was a Birth, certainly
We had evidence and no doubt. I had seen birth and death,
But had thought they were different; this Birth was
Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death, our death.
We returned to our places, these Kingdoms,
But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation,
With an alien people clutching their gods.
I should be glad of another death.
 BusyLizzie 25 Mar 2013
In reply to Tim Chappell: Yes, indeed, I know it well, and the echo of it made me smile on a Monday morning (thank you, An Triubhas). No less relevant this week than at Christmas. And perhaps the crux lines of the poem ("I had seen birth and death,
But had thought they were different") might connect with certain moments at the crux of some climbing experiences...

In reply to An Triubhas: wet below the snow line is that under the snow!
drifts upto 12 ft deep a lot of snow has left the fields and fillled the roads roads a lot narrower in places depth depends on wind direction,
hope that helps

The wind has stripped a lot of the snow from many of the slopes at 300m around my neck of the woods (Skipton). I'd expect there to have been more snow dumped on the Dales itself, but the depth will be very variable depending on aspect.
 PPPatrick 25 Mar 2013
In reply to MHutch:

Many thanks. Yes, I'm seeing the same thaw you are on Ilkley Moor and wondering if there's more left around Settle and the 3 Peaks.

Cheers. Patrick.

Is the snow all soft powder or is it frozen in places (enough to need crampons)?

Looking at heading up this weekend, hoping for some nice wintry conditions but not impossible to walk in.

In reply to An Triubhas:

It was a pain in the ass getting anywhere on Saturday. You could go from pretty much nothing but frozen ground to knee deep snow, to ice in about 100m.

I fell through the snow into a river. That was "fun".
OP AdCo82 25 Mar 2013
if conditions stay as they are would you recommend crampons or will semi rigid boots and a pair of walking poles do?
 Kid Spatula 25 Mar 2013
In reply to An Triubhas:

I'd take crampons to be honest. Especially if planning on Whernside or Pen y Ghent.
OP AdCo82 25 Mar 2013
In reply to Kid Spatula:

thank you. planning on trying all three......but we'll see?!
 sheeny 25 Mar 2013
In reply to An Triubhas: no crampons at the min soft snow deep drifts in places might be crusty by fri but more snow expected fri
roads all clear now
OP AdCo82 27 Mar 2013
any updates folks? I take it more snow has fallen?
 lpretro1 27 Mar 2013
In reply to An Triubhas: Report from a friend in Skipton today recceing a mtb ride says a lot of the small lanes are blocked with big snow drifts and several have hard packed rutted icy snow on them
OP AdCo82 27 Mar 2013
In reply to lpretro1:

thank you. I'm heading up from blackburn area and parking at Horton in Ribblesdale, is the route to there open at the moment?

on that note is it free or pay and display parking for the start?
 Simon Caldwell 27 Mar 2013
In reply to An Triubhas:
Pay and display in the village car park. Some free parking by the roads just outside the village, fills quickly in summer but you should be OK at the moment (unless it's covered in snow).
OP AdCo82 27 Mar 2013
In reply to Toreador:

cheers!
Pennine 27 Mar 2013
In reply to An Triubhas: Depending on where the snow has been dumped, you might be able to park on the road either side of the campsite entrance. Couple of hundred yards before PyG cafe.
OP AdCo82 27 Mar 2013
In reply to Pennine:

that's great info thank you. let's hope the snow stays away from there!
Pennine 27 Mar 2013
In reply to An Triubhas: btw if you like a cuppa/cake/bacon sarni etc & the PyG cafe is closed drive north through village towards Ribblehead. After ¼ mile & just before railway bridge there's Blind Beck cafe. Lady owner occasionally puts her open sign out mid-week so ring the bell & she will open up for you.
OP AdCo82 29 Mar 2013
Is remaining snow soft powder or frozen?
Pennine 29 Mar 2013
In reply to An Triubhas: I was on Whernside yesterday. Apart from a few icy sections the snow is mostly soft & about 6" deep on the top. The snow wasn't a problem but the wind was! Gale force crosswind & soft snow made progress slow to the summit. Only saw 1 walker & 2 runners out.

OP AdCo82 29 Mar 2013
In reply to Pennine:

excellent, thanks once again.

Think I'll leave the crampons behind but take the walking poles!

Great photo's
OP AdCo82 30 Mar 2013

Any final updates folks?
Pennine 30 Mar 2013
In reply to An Triubhas: Ok here's another update Early start from Horton in low cloud and sleet. 20 mins later this disappeared to blue skies and sunshine. Paths are generally clear to about 1500ft. Hard packed snow from previous footfall thereafter. The climb up the rocky prow is firm snow & rock (straight forward). The descent could give the odd comedy slip down to the finger post. Poles came in handy. Fantastic weather today.
