I have been registered self employed for several years. I haven't actually done any work on that basis for a couple of years now and it is unlikely to start again. I need to stop my self employed status but is it possible to backdate this?

thanks

In reply to BigBrother: I have exactly the same question and my wife thinks I can so I can reclaim my self employed NI - I'm going to phone the HMRC in a few days once the year end rush has died down.

In reply to Rob Exile Ward: I have just filled out a pointless 0 income tax return and have a NI bill due today. I don't know whether to pay the NI and then cancel and fill another 0 income return for this year or whether I can backdate to avoid another return and not pay the NI.

In reply to BigBrother: Talking of paying NI bills - I have one due today. Is there a pay over the phone number to call? Otherwise it won't be done today...will I be charged? Tax return will be done tonight...(sigh) I will never learn.
