Saw this butterfly in the Alport Valley, Bleaklow, Derbyshire - so moorland habitat close to a stream.

It looks similar to a Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary according to books but the underside of hind wings dont look like the book photos - so any entomologists out there on UKC? Any ideas?

Yep, it’s a Dark Green Fritillary.

I’ll take a pic of a recent article on them in Derbyshire Wildlife Trust’s magazine, as that’s quite interesting (if you’re interested in this kind of stuff), however I’m out and about at the moment so bear with.

Thanks both - that does appear to be it.

Be interested in the article Rob.

Yes, definitely a Dark Green Frit., the greenish colour on the underside of the hind-wing is the key diagnostic feature and separates it from the similar looking High Brown and Silver-washed Frits.

Hi Steve,

Sorry for the delayed reply, here's a couple of pics of the article.

Funnily enough Adam Long spotted a Silver Washed Fritillary on a Derbyshire Wildlife Trust reserve near Via Gellia this weekend - a rare sight indeed (but hopefully one that will become more common). Here's a link: https://twitter.com/adam_jb_long/status/1279855361059631104

Funnily enough I was down in Hampshire/Surrey this weekend visiting family. My Dad - who's big into his butterflies - took me to see various local sites and the Silver Washed Fritillary was one of the highlights. That said, his particular passion (specialist though it may be) is the Silver Studded Blues, so it was good to see them too - sounds like it's been a good year for them.
