Wow! I'm with you there. Space exploration is so interesting and exciting. I still remember getting up in the small hours to watch the first moon landing. They were exciting times.

It makes you realise how impressive Apollo was when you consider the compressed timescale it all happened in. From the first manned orbital flight (Apollo 7) to the first lunar landing was just over two years. It helps to have an ideological enemy.

At it's peak, the Apollo programme employed half a million people.

Surely more than were involved in the construction of the Great Pyramids!?

And another one in the eye for the conspiracy deniers. As if half a million people will spend their lives regurgitating "a lie".

It also sucked a huge amount out of the USAs GDP which arguably could have been spent on other things.  Still remember the big tv being dragged into assembly at primary school for the landing.

Yeah but not all that half million were in on the fake bit...

Apollo 11 landed at 20.17 GMT on Sunday 20th July 1969.

Perhaps you remember a repeat on the news next day?

Well one small bit did.

If they spend money from taxes or borrowing within the US, and the space program money was almost all spent within the US, how would that 'suck money out' of US GDP.  If anything it would increase GDP.

Wow.  That's some size of vehicle for the lander.  I remember seeing the Saturn 5 at the space centre in Florida.  Presumably if the lander on this one is much larger than the lander on the Apollo flights the rest of the rocket needs to scale up too.  Or have they got better propellants this time?

Watch for all mankind on Apple TV plus, it was just fantastic and I may have to pay if the next series comes out after my free trial ends 😮

it  certainly did - we were on holiday in Teignmouth at the time - on the last day of school our form master let us watch the launch live on his TV.  I can vividly remember the evening of the landing - I watched "The Bridges at Toko-Ri(??))" with my dad as the expectation mounted.   We were got up in what felt like the middle of the night to watch the moon walk which was early as they were too excited to have the planned rest period beforehand.

To play conspiracy theories advocate - a move that will increase my popularity no end, how do we know that it employed half a million people?

Only mousetrap. Keeping to the 60’s theme.

Keeping to the 60s theme I see that UFO (Gerry Anderson) is back on terrestrial Freeview - giving a stylish view of how things would be in 1980 as seen from the time of the moon landings!

They should go back to the 1960s name for the VAB - Vertical Assembly Building
