I will take notice when they are wearing Ron Hills down the cat walk

coincidentally was watching a re-run of Julia Bradbury doing scafell pike. She did an interview with Joss Naylor who was proudly wearing his ron hills (with significant bulge).  Looked a lot more comfy than Julia's flares.

Sorry, no Ron Hills - you can have Balenciaga for £475 though:

If you've ever paid attention to the kind of nonsense fashion that gets shown on the catwalk (as distinct from what actually ends up in the overpriced shops) you may well note that Ronhills are quite a bit more sensible!

This is ridiculous. Next thing you know, people will be wearing trainers when they aren't playing sports.

I know it's an old phenomenon but you have to say that the  Gucci hiking boots are pretty ludicrous.

(Apparently the suit is a descendant of 19th century leisure clothing - hunting and riding outfits of the time).

'Hiking style'?  What Kate Moss is wearing in that photo looks more like a pair of shined-up army surplus para boots to me.  That's more 'dog-on-a-string' style innit?

OP Bob Kemp 11 Sep 2018
In reply to deepsoup:

What's wrong with that? That's my hiking style!

In reply to Bob Kemp:

Nowt wrong with it at all, it's just a bit weird to see them described as "urban hiker style", let alone "unmistakably mountain-ready boots".  Both those phrases suggest someone who's taken their credit card for a walk around Ellis Brigham's to me, not someone who's been down to the Army Surplus for a pair of para boots and a parka.

Are you trying to tell us that you appreciated his Broad Stand?

… You dirty old man.

This is old alpine-hat.   The Luis Trenker brand has been trading on this idea for years.   Perhaps a Leni #riefenstahl next!

Or perhaps TNF could go Gwen Moffat

Yes, but it's always amusing when the fashion world periodically rediscovers the outdoor industry. Do you remember when rock shoes became a dance-floor accessory? I think it was the pretty colours that did it.

some of those 1980s fluorescents would have looked well under UV and strobes

It was around the late 80s if I remember...

Or wearing jeans when they aren't navvies on the 19th century trans America railway

Really!! Rock shoes made to clubs, that one escaped me.

a belt entirely of old krabs would be quite something!  Would I be able to sell it for a huge price if I set up a market boutique of army surplus pouches belts and krabs?

Yes, word got around that it was easier to do hard moves in them.

Robin Williams used to wear rock boots in Mork and Mindy
