I’m at home today, so sat in the conservatory watching the annual frog orgy in the pond when I spotted odd goings on at the new nest box!

I put this up at Christmas and a lone blue tit took almost immediate interest.  Over the last few weeks (I assume it is a he) has been trying to get a mate interested in the potential nest site, with little success so far.

Today I spotted a pair of great tits taking an interest, one making repeated visits inside and hammering the box, I presume to test it for rot.  Any said blue tit turns up and takes exception to the presence of the great tit pair and has so far fought them off.

I do hope one takes up residence, place your bets.

or will the both be put off?

In my experience once the hole is big enough (through years of wear or through pecking by great tits) the great tits always end up with the box.

The usual rule of thumb for hole size is 35mm dia. for Blue tits and 38mm for GT.

Sure enough when I renewed my box with the latter GT’s nested after many years of blue.
