Help!!!

Looking for advice from the ever-reliable ukc!!

I'm just referencing an essay I've written on medical ethics and need to reference the mental capacity act, which i have accessed here; http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2005/9/contents

I'm using endnote and referencing in vancouver style. I'm hoping there might be some lawyers or law students who can tell me how to reference legislation. Not sure what info i need to include?

Important to say when it was accessed as it is online material. It wouldnt let me post the reference without adding the spaces after < and before > so remove them.

In reply to nikki_smilez: Academics love their referencing don't they? Often seems that the way the referencing is done is more important to them than the quality of thought and argument. I know what my views are on that...

I don't think you should reference it as though it was online - the fact you accessed it online isn't really relevant - you are referencing the legislation itself, the need to reference the link and accessed dates for web references are based on the changeability of web based references which aren't relevant to an act of parliament like this.

I think it should be:

1. Title of the Act including the date – underlined, or bold, or in italics

2. The letter ‘c’ followed by chapter number of the Act – in brackets

3. Place of publication – followed by a comma

4. Publisher – followed by a full stop.

So something like:

Mental Capacity Act 2005 (c 9) London, HMSO.

wayne i hope you're right because the quality of my argument is pretty rubbish!

I've referenced it as it was referenced in a bma document, so mental capacity act 2005, s1(5) etc, should be fine!

Completely invaluable, because as has been said, academics do love their references and it is possible at university level to lose marks for not citing references correctly.

Incidently, you should say,
"Wish I had read this before I did the other one......etc"

rather than
"Wish I read this before I done the other one haha "

God, I hope that doesn't reflect your prose style in your essays!
