As I write this I am watching England play Spain in the semi final of the European Amputee Football Championships.

Martin Heald is part of the team and some of you may know Martin as he is also on the `GB Para-climbing team.

It got me thinking, I do not know of anyone else who currently represents their country in two different sports. Does anyone know different?

PS. We are winning 2-0

Denis Compton was one of the finest cricketers this country has ever produced, and, though he never played for England at football, won both the FA Cup and League Championship with Arsenal.

Rebecca R is the one who sprang to mind from the modern era, but did she perform on the international stage in both rowing and cycling at the same time?

Not current

But Andy Goram represented Scotland at both football and cricket

Great trivia. Goram shall henceforth be known as the "Scottish Compton" in our house.

I once represented the Uk in a high speed morse code competition and when I later lived in Eire, I represented Eire at a hedgelaying competition in Holland.

Lord Desborough - not sure if he represented GB twice, but he excelled in a number of sports, and was a keen mountaineer.

Brilliant post never heard of him - the best film not yet made. The bit about him and Charlie Chaplin playing table tennis is a belter.

And he was a national hero in Albania but didn't turn down the throne like the exceptional C.B. Fry

Although his motor racing exploits weren't necessarily for his country, Alex Zinardi won 2 paralympic gold medals in handcycling for Italy at London 2012. A truly inspirational man.

Oh and isn't Wiggo trying to become an Olympic rower?

I'm sure we used to have a sprinter who also did bob sleigh but maybe I misremembered that one ?
 Ian W 12 Oct 2017
In reply to GrahamD:

No, loads of sprinters tried the bob events. Nigel Walker and mark Lewis Francis are ones I remember, and I think Allyn Condon also had a go....im sure there were others as well.

I'll also give a shout out to a friend of mine from Otley, Gill Myers, who didn't represent GB at anything, but has been both British Female Veteran Fell Running champion and British Female Enduro Motorcycling champion at various times.

Theres also Jeff Wilson, who was a test Rugby union and cricketer for Australia in the 90's and 00's.
In reply to Ben_Climber:

There's a few people have played both codes of rugby.

Too similar really; its like saying Carl Lewis represented USA in 2 sports because he did 100m and long jump.

Nigel Walker - sprinting & rugby union for Wales.

 Ian W 12 Oct 2017
In reply to Chris Harris:

Mind you, theres an argument that his Rugby skills comprised catching a ball and sprinting! He was a bloody good finisher, though, so he did what he was paid to do.
