I'd like to rig up a rope swing in the garden for the kids. Any advice on fixings,  materials etc?

Horizontal branch on an oak tree. 4.1m off ground. 25cm branch diameter.

Do I go for a single line with seat, or two lines with seat between them?

I'm sure the UKC hive mind can come up with something far cooler than I could.

Thanks,

Chris

I the kids are 8 or over, just give them the rope etc. Half the fun is in the building.

Consider damage to the tree - carpet could protect the bark. Having it too tight will damage the branch over a long time as it grows. Having it loose and 'sawing' will damage the tree very quickly.

Yes, I was thinking about that. Perhaps it would it be better to put static line (thick sling) around the tree with a crab or pivot hanging below it, so that there's no movement on the tree.

Single rope. Throw rope over branch. Bowline on one end. Thread other end through bowline. Oak branch with hole for rope in it. Tie branch to rope. Swing.

Good point, keeping it simple is part of the fun I suppose. Maybe I've been overthinking this.
